ClearSCADA Utilities

I have been using ClearSCADA software for the past year or so and have found it to be one of the better SCADA systems I've used.  However, certain tasks are just plain tedious.  Case in point: I have a certain template in ClearSCADA in which address property overrides did not get locked down properly.  Consequently address changes were made both in the template and individually in each of the instances.  In some cases the template has the right address; in some, the instance does.  To make matters worse, the template (and therefore each instance) has roughly 100 points.  Using ClearSCADA ViewX, the only way I know of to reconcile the addresses is to open each point in the template and each instance & compare them.  Yuck.  I can think of better ways to spend a day than clicking through 300 points one by one to compare addresses.

I tried a SQL query to compare them, but turns out you cannot get a listing of points within a template using SQL in ClearSCADA (tech support says it's by design).  Fortunately, ClearSCADA has a nice API.  So, I wrote a windows app to compare an instance to it's template & list address differences. I've put it on GitHub here: https://github.com/jlschrag/ClearSCADA_Utilities.  So, go take a look, download the zip file, and play with it.  Hopefully, it helps someone else.

Once you have downloaded the zip, you have full source code.  If you only want to run the program, navigate to ClearSCADA_Utilities\bin\Debug and run ClearSCADA_Utilities.exe

Note: The "Utilities" are currently only really "Utility" (there's only one to start with), but I will add more as I have need or other people provide good ideas for other tools.

Dynamic Object Oriented programming in ArchestrA

As with most developers using Wonderware products, I often have to get creative to compensate for the limitations in the development platform, scripting language, etc. Lately, I've been need to create "objects" (in the object oriented programming sense of the word, not the app server sense). That is I need collections of data describing some real world thing. For example, I have been creating a callout feature for a client's SCADA host system. The callouts are stored in a SQL database and my scripts pull out a whole set at a time. Initialize With Care

Pointers are funny things.  They are one of the make or break concepts for beginners, and even years later, they can cause grief to experienced developers.  I am no exception.  Here is one such story: I was faced with a class which I wanted to refactor.  It can be simplified as follows: In the interest of breaking up the responsibilities, I added a couple of interfaces. The idea is that I can pass around smart pointers to these interfaces and begin to decouple portions of the code.  For example, I can inject them into classes that need them: However, I made a mistake.  I blame it on years of using boost::intrustive_ptr instead of std::shared_ptr, but enough excuses.  Let's see if you can spot it.
